Concrete Paving
Built to last
While the materials and techniques have evolved since the first Concrete pavement was built in Scotland in 1872 (some of which still remains! The result is the same. Concrete paving creates a smooth, durable surface on highways, parking lots, and residential streets. RP Constructors utilizes a fleet of slipform pavers along with years of experience to complete paving projects in the tri-state area.
The unique RP Approach
Slipform paving is ideal to use for large jobs that require high production rates. Our fleet of slipform pavers gives us the ability to self-perform concrete paving needs for private and governmental clients. This ability gives us an advantage over other concrete contractors.
Being able to design the roadway itself is another advantage. Our in-house engineering firm can design roadways and our construction company does the work. This streamlined process allows us to complete jobs faster and on budget. Combining engineering and construction expertise means that whatever we design can be built, and we build it to work.
There are two methods for paving with concrete – Slipform and Fixed Form.
Slipform paving uses a self-propelled machine that rides on tracks over the area to be paved. Portland cement concrete (PCC) is deposited in front of the machine, which spreads, consolidates, shapes, and float finishes the area in one continuous operation. Portland cement is the most common type of cement used around the world. It contains concrete, mortar, stucco, and non-specialty grout.
Fixed form paving uses stationary metal forms that are set and aligned on a solid foundation. This process uses more steps as forms need to be cleaned and oiled to prevent sticking, and two machines are required to spread, shape, consolidate, and float finish the concrete. Once the forms are removed, the edges must be cured immediately.
RP Constructors uses slipform paving for various projects, including highway and road construction for local and state governments, as well as runways, aprons, and taxiways for airports.
Our Services at Work
RP Constructors won the bid as prime contractor for the City of Sioux City Myrtle Street traditional heavy civil project in 2020. This was a two-year, 6.7 million dollar project requiring RP Constructors to reconstruct the residential street and completely replace all underground utilities.
To ensure the project lasted for decades, crews performed subgrade treatment to reinforce the soil in the Perry Creek floodplain. This involved treating the subgrade with Portland cement and placing a rock layer on top of the treated subgrade for better long-term stability. A subdrain was installed under the paving to drain any future trapped water. Water is the long-term enemy of concrete paving.
We utilized our slipform paver for mainline (31-feet wide) concrete paving. New driveways and sidewalks were done by hand. CEC, our engineering firm, performed the construction survey for the entire project. CEC flew a drone over the project to record images of both before and after, giving us a record for comparison. Lastly, erosion control and seeding were done.
This area will not have to be touched for ten years by the client. Eventually, routine maintenance will have to occur, but the overall improvements should last well over 25 years, likely 50 years or more.
