Justin Higman, the owner of Lazy H Campground in Akron, Iowa, wanted to create a state-of-the-art campground complete with hard surface roads and pads with Wi-Fi capabilities, water, and sewer hookups. The project was constructed in one year.

The Client

The Lazy H Campground is a private campground set on 235 acres located between the Big Sioux River and the Loess Hills Byway. The campground features eight private cabins and 65 RV sites on Little Pearle Lake, a 50-acre fisherman’s haven stocked with freshwater fish, miles of hiking/biking trails, water activities, and more.

Higman’s vision was to have the nicest campground in the area, while boosting the local economy.

What We Did

Both RP Constructors and CEC worked on this project. CEC designed the project from scratch, performed all the surveying, and engineering and RP Constructors did the construction. We installed underground utilities, so each pad has full water and sanitary sewer hookups. We paved the pads and all the roadways. The amount of concrete poured was more than the amount needed to repave every driveway in Akron.

One of the challenges we faced was dealing with shallow groundwater due to the campground’s proximity to the river. Most companies would install a single, giant lift system to move the wastewater out through the campground. While this works, it requires a very deep excavation that will always be at least halfway filled with groundwater. Our experience allowed us to foresee this problem and design a better solution. Instead of relying on one large lift station, we designed and built a system using multiple smaller lift stations that only required shallow (above the water) holes. These stations are connected to move the waste efficiently.
